Portable computers started as heavy units the size of small suitcases. Some of the early portable computers are mentioned in the chapter about x86 microprocessor prehistory above. They evolved into the notebook or laptop computers common today. They have the same features as desktop computers but in a smaller, self-contained package.
LCDs were once the hallmark of notebook computers when nearly all desktop computers had CRT displays. LCDs are discussed above in the chapter on video displays.
