Capacitors in parallel

Connecting capacitors in parallel has the effect of increasing the total capacitance. This is opposite of connecting resistors in parallel.

Capacitors in Parallel
Two capacitors of equal value connected in parallel essentially doubles the plate area. However, the distance between the plates remains the same.
The capacitors in parallel on the left essentially act like this capacitor. It has the same distance between the plates as each of the capacitors on the left but the plate area is twice the plate area of each capacitor on the left.

The total capacitance of capacitors connected in parallel is the same as resistors in series. The values are simply added together.
